On the morning of June 6, 1944, beginning of the invasion of Normandy, U.S. soldiers are prepared for landing on Omaha Beach. Just open the doors of their landing crafts are welcomed by a fierce fire from German artillery, which massacred many of the soldiers as soon as they put foot ashore. Captain John H. Miller, under the command of the 2nd Battalion of Ranger Charlie company, survive the carnage of the landing, brings together a group of soldiers to try to penetrate the German defences and open gap to move from the beach.
In the Department of Guerra of the United States, in Washington D. C., General George Marshall is informed that three of the four brothers of the Ryan family have been killed in combat just days apart and that his mother will receive three telegrams of condolences in the same day. It also has news that the fourth brother, James Francis Ryan of the company Baker, 506 1st Regiment paratroopers’ infantry, 101st Airborne Division, a soldier is missing in combat somewhere in Normandy. After reading a letter sent by Abraham Lincoln to Mrs. Bixby, who lost five sons in the war, his team Marshall orders that Ryan must be found and sent home immediately in compliance with the policy of the only survivor of the US Army.
In France, three days after D-day, Miller receives the order to locate Ryan. It brings together six men from his company (Horvath, Mellish, Reiben, Jackson, Wade and Caparzo) and another of the 29th Infantry Division (Upham), who speaks French and German, to serve as a translator. No information about the whereabouts of Ryan, Miller and his men moved to the town of Neuville, where with a platoon of 101. After entering the town under a heavy rain, Caparzo is wounded in the chest by a German sniper and died bleeding without that no one can come to their aid. Jackson locates the enemy shooter and drops it when Caparzo has already died. Soon after they find a soldier’s name James Frederick Ryan, of Minnesota, although they quickly realize that it is not their man. In their search they also encounter a member of the company Charlie, who informs them that its landing area was Vierville and Baker and Charlie companies had the same meeting point. Once there they located a friend of Ryan who tells them that the man that seeks is defending a bridge of strategic importance on the Merderet River in the town of Ramelle.
The search party meets a German machine gun nest on way to Ramelle and Miller decides to take the opportunity to neutralize the position, near a radio station and that has already destroyed several Allied soldiers, despite the misgivings of his men. In the round, Wade, the doctor of the group, is mortally wounded. The only German superviniente is subject to the wrath of all the members of the American Group, less Upham, protesting against Miller for letting his men try to shoot it. The German soldier pleads for his life and Miller lets it go blindfolded and with orders to first American patrol encountered. After seeing his captain let go of an enemy, Reiben ceases to trust in his leadership and communicates his decision to drop out of the group, which led him to confront with Horvath. Both hotly discussed until Miller decides to intervene and revealing his personal situation prior to the war, when he was teacher of English, information that had led the members of the group to place bets. Reiben decides to finally stay.
The Group of American soldiers finally reach the outskirts of Ramelle, where, in an ambush at a German half-track vehicle, they encounter three U.S. paratroopers. One of them is James Francis Ryan. Already in Ramelle, Ryan is informed of the death of his three brothers and the mission to return home, in which two American soldiers have died. I am greatly moved with the death of his brothers, but he feels it is not just returning home and told Miller to say his mother «when I found, was here with only brothers that they were me», looking at the small group of soldiers which defended the bridge of Ramelle while he pronounced the words. Miller decides to take command of all the men and defend the bridge with few means at its disposal.
Germans come to the town with a force of more than fifty men, and with the support of armoured vehicles. The Americans have prepared the defense and they inflict many casualties on the Germans, including the destruction of two tanks made with socks and fat, sticky but most components of the Miller Group, including Jackson, Mellish, and Horvath die in the fight.
